"The standard of truth has been erected: no unhallowed hand can stop the work from progressing, persecutions may rage, mobs may combine, armies may assemble, calumny may defame, but the truth of God will go forth boldly, nobly, and independent till it has penetrated every continent, visited every clime, swept every country, and sounded in every ear, till the purposes of God shall be accomplished and the great Jehovah shall say the work is done."

Theodemocracy, also known as Mormon Democracy, is an ideology thought up by Joseph Smith, The founder of The Later-Day Saints movement. It combines Mormon values with Christian Democracy, where religious leaders and their decisions are sustained by votes from their congregation. The end goal of theodemocracy was to lay the groundwork for the Kingdom of God before the second coming of Christ.

After the death of Joseph Smith, Theodemocracy was brought to Utah by Brigham Young, where it played a small role in the government of the state of Deseret until Utah became a territory in 1850.

History

Mormonism is a restorationist Christian denomination that follows The Teachings of an ancient archive referencing a forgotten Native American Hebrew society, the archives are known as 'The Book of Mormon', which Mormons believe is an extension of The Bible.

Limited Geography Model

A common criticism of Mormonism is the lack of archaeological, ethnic, linguistic, and geographic proof of the millions of Lamanites, Nephites, Jaredites, and Mulekites that settled in The Americas from Israel. Mormon scholars have proposed The 'Limited Geography Model' which claims The Israeli-Native American Tribes settled in Messo-America, at a much smaller scale than what the original Book of Mormon claims. Mormon scholars have cited Genetic drift as a counterargument to the claim of no ethnic or genetic proof for The Book of Mormon's claims. As for archaeology, Mormons have argued that dismissing The Book of Mormon's authenticity for The lack of Historical accuracy is short-sighted, as archaeology constantly expands and undercovering new treasures.

The teachings of The Tribes have changed over time, originally Mormons believed all Native Americans were descended from Israelites and still had strong cultural connections to Israel and Judaism. Modern Mormonism teaches Israelites were among The ancestors of Native Americans, and Israelite influence on Native Americans has been lost to time.

Anarchronicisms in The Book of Mormon

There are various things mentioned in The Book of Mormon that didn't exist yet in Ancient America. Horses, elephants, Cattle and Cows, Goats, Swine, Barely, Wheat, Chariots, Silk, compasses, windows, metal, steel, iron, and the usage of The Egyptian language. As well as some brand-new introductions, The Book of Mormon mentions two animals "Curelom and Cumom" claiming they're 'very helpful' animals. Nothing is mentioned about their looks, identity, or texture.

The most notable anachronism is the claim that Ancient Native Americans had horses, which weren't available in The Americas at the time. Mormon scholars substituted horses for tapirs, which made tapirs a symbol for ex-Mormons.

In 1997, Mormons founded an apologetic organization called Faithful Answers, Informed Response (FAIR), also known as "FAIRMormon" to counter arguments against Mormonism

Mormonism and Freemasonry

Joseph Smith, his brother Hyrum, and his father Joseph Smith Sr. were all Freemasons. Smith founded a Masonic lodge in 1842 in Nauvoo, and remained a Freemason until his death. Endowment ceremonies in Mormonism have been pointed out to be very similar to elements of Freemasonry.

Brigham Young prohibited Mormons from joining The Freemasons, though the reasons are unclear. In 1925, The LDS Church banned members from joining The Freemasons, this ban was lifted in 1984.

The Golden Plates

Lots of debate and criticism stems from The Golden Plates, which Mormons believe Joseph Smith translated and published into The Book of Mormon. The Book of Mormon was originally written in 'Reformed Egyptian', which Mormon skeptics call out since 'Reformed Egyptian' isn't a known or spoken dialect of Egyptian, and that there's no archaeological, linguistic, and other evidence of the use of Egyptian writing in the ancient Americas. Mormon skeptics believe Joseph Smith made up the language since the words and grammar of 'Reformed Egyptian' can't be fact-checked by linguistics.

Eight people, known as "The Eight Witnesses" have testified to seeing Smith's Golden Plates. Three of the witnesses - Oliver Cowdery, David Whitmer, and Martin Harris - testified they were shown the plates by an angel and held them. All three of the Witnesses maintained their testimony throughout their lives, even after leaving the LDS church. All Witnesses, except Martin Harris were related to The Smiths or Witmers.

Lost 116 pages

During The writing of The Book of Mormon, Lucy Harris, The Wife of Martin Harris hid 116 translated pages from The Plates of Lehi to test whether or not Joseph Smith was reading off The Golden Tablets or making it up. Rather than translating off the same plates, The Lord commanded Joseph Smith to translate off the plates of Nephi to teach Smith a lesson. Mormon skeptics heavily criticize this event as they believe it proves Joseph Smith it a false prophet, and The Story of Mormonism is false.

Blacks in Mormonism

Joseph Smith himself was an Abolitionist and appointed many Blacks to priesthood and ordinances.

When Brigham Young became President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints after Smith's death, the teachings of Black People drastically changed. Young described slavery as "A Divine institution" and legalized the practice of slavery in Utah. In 1852, The LDS Church banned Blacks from Priesthood and restricted Black members from participating in Marriage. This ban was later repealed in 1978.

Polygamy

Joseph Smith claimed an Angle with a flaming sword visited him three times between 1834 and 1842, and told him to construct polygamy into Mormon teachings. The UnNamed Angle told Smith the goal of Polygamy was to increase the population of The Church and replenish Earth. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints eventually banned polygamy in 1890 and ex-communicated polygamists which led to the creation of The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints which still practices Polygamy to this day.

Modern Mormon teachings claim Polygamy was intended for Joseph and hierarchal members of The Church only, and not specifically his followers.

Polygamy is still a polarizing and controversial topic in modern Latter-Day Saints teachings.

Fundementalist Theodemocracy

After The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-Day Saints banned polygamy in 1890, many Mormons were split on whether or not to continue the tradition or abandon it entirely. Fundamentalist Mormons abandoned The LDS and established The FLDS: The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Later-Day Saints which still promotes the usage of polygamy. Fundamentalist Mormons have strict dress code rules and still follow Brigham Young's controversial teachings of prohibiting Blacks from Priesthood.
