Liberal Conservatism

Not to be confused with Conservative Liberalism or Libertarian Conservatism.

"Issues that divided Conservatives from Liberal Democrats are now issues where we both agree."

Liberal Conservatism, often shortened to LibCon is an economically center-right to right, culturally moderate but generally right-leaning and usually center to authoritarian-leaning on the lib-auth axis, ideology. Liberal conservatism incorporates the  Classical Liberal view of minimal government intervention in the economy, according to which individuals should be free to participate in the market and generate wealth without government interference. However, unlike most liberals, liberal conservatism emphasizes trying to conserve this worldview and views any attempts to challenge it as an existential threat. They are also unafraid to be called conservative, even if they're often more socially liberal on certain issues.

History

Historically, conservatism in the 18th and 19th centuries comprised a set of principles based on concern for established tradition, respect for authority, and religious values. This form of traditionalist or classical conservatism is often considered to be exemplified by the writings of Joseph de Maistre in the post-Enlightenment age. Contemporaneous liberalism, now recalled as classical liberalism, advocated both political freedom for individuals and a free market in the economic sphere. Ideas of this sort were promulgated by John Locke, Montesquieu, Adam Smith, Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill, who are respectively remembered as the fathers of liberalism, including economic liberalism, the separation of church and state, social liberalism and utilitarianism.

According to scholar Andrew Vincent, the maxim of liberal conservatism is "economics is prior to politics". Others emphasize the openness of historical change and suspicion of tyrannical majorities behind the hailing of individual liberties and traditional virtues by authors such as Edmund Burke and Alexis de Tocqueville as the basis of current liberal conservatism which can be seen both in the works of Raymond Aron and Michael Oakeshott. However, there is general agreement that the original liberal conservatives were those who combined conservative social attitudes with an economically liberal outlook, adapting a previous aristocratic understanding of natural inequalities between men to the rule of meritocracy, without directly criticizing privileges of birth as long as individual liberties were guaranteed. Over time, the majority of conservatives in the Western world came to adopt free-market economic ideas as the Industrial Revolution progressed and the aristocracy lost its power, to the extent that such ideas are now generally considered as part of conservatism. Nonetheless, the term liberal is used in most countries to describe those with free-market economic views. This is the case in continental Europe, Australia, and Latin America.

Kernesism

Kernesism is the ideology of Gennadiy Kernes who was a mayor of Kharkiv from 2010 to 2020. It is corruptionary doctrine and cronyistic, like many other Party of Regions members. The party of Kernes was "Block of Kernes — Succesfull Kharkiv". Kharkivians think that he was a good mayor and is respected even after his death in December 2020 due to COVID complications. Howerer outside of Eastern Ukraine, he remains a controversial figure as he supported pro-Russian unrests following the Euromaidan.

Romneyism

Romneyism is based on the political beliefs of Utah Senator and 2012 Republican Presidential nominee, Mitt Romney. Romney describes himself as being a Moderate Republican. His first major position in politics was serving as Governor of Massachusetts, where he cut spending, increased fees, and closed corporate tax loopholes in order to bring about surpluses. Romney also signed into law the Massachusetts health care reform or "Romneycare" which aimed at providing health insurance to all Massachusetts residents and would ironically serve as a model for "Obamacare".

On social issues, he is quite conservative. Although he was pro-choice as governor, he later became pro-life in 2005 as he became culturally right, opposing abortion in all cases except for rape, incest, and to save the life of the mother. In addition to being pro-life, Romney also opposes pornography and LGBT+ rights, although, by 2022, he began to moderate his stance on the LGBT+ community, voting in favor of the Respect for Marriage Act, which requires all states and territories to recognize the validity of same-sex marriages and civil unions while also protecting religious freedom.

In 2012 Romney won the Republican nomination for President and faced incumbent President Barack Obama. Obama criticized Romney for calling Russia the number one geopolitical foe to The United States and for his proposed Medicare reforms. Obama ended up defeating Romney and served another term as President.

During the 2016 Presidential Election, Romney criticized Donald "Why doesn’t he show his birth certificate?" Trump calling him a phony and a fraud. In response, Trump called Romney a "choke artist". In 2018 Romney was elected to the Senate representing Utah, he became the most prominent Anti-Trump Republican in the Senate voting to convict him in both his impeachment trials. Romney also marched alongside Black Lives Matter protesters in 2020 and voted to confirm Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court in 2022.

Blue Dog Democratism

Blue Dog Democrats are Moderate members of The Democratic Party who caucus in The Blue Dog Coalition in the US House of Representatives. The Blue Dog Coalition was founded by a group of conservative Democrats in 1995 in response to the defeats in the 1994 midterm elections. Many of the founding members of the Blue Dog Coalition were Southern conservatives who were still members of the Democratic Party. The caucus advocated for Fiscal Conservatism, while being mostly moderate on social issues. They also advocated for bipartisan consensus with Republicans and acted as a check on legislation that was considered too far left or right. Today the Blue Dog Coalition retains it's fiscal conservative views but is more aligned with the rest of The Democratic Party on social issues. The caucus is also a lot more diverse not only in terms of ethnicity but also in terms of what states it's members represent. Blue Dogs have changed from a coalition of "southern white men" to "a multi-regional, multicultural group". One notable former member of the Blue Dog Coalition would be Senator Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona.

Cameronism

Cameronism is an economically center-right and culturally center to center-left ideology based off the views and policies of former UK prime minister and Tory Party leader David Cameron.

Beliefs

Big Society

Cameron described his big society project as an example of people power to turn government on its head. It involves large community projects to allow the British people to let their passion run wild without government constraints. The initiatives being championed include a local buy-out of a rural pub, efforts to recruit volunteers to keep museums open, support to speed up broadband supply, and giving residents more power over council spending. These schemes and others in the future, he said, would represent "the biggest, most dramatic redistribution of power from elites in Whitehall to the man and woman on the street".

Cameron claimed that, the talents and initiative of people had been wasted, stating that over-centralised government had turned public sector workers into the "weary, disillusioned puppets of government targets".

Muscular Liberalism

Cameron's muscular liberalism was the promotion of Western values such as liberal democracy, freedom of speech and expression and equal rights for all. It was devised to counter Islamic radicalisation and terrorism while still remaining committed to the liberal principle of open borders and diversity. Cameron claimed this "muscle" was necessary as liberal multiculturalism had failed and led to rising tensions within the Islamic community and a rise in terrorist attacks.

Austerity

Austerity is a fiscal policy that was promoted by David Cameron following the Great Recession. The term was used by the Coalition and Conservative governments in office from 2010 to 2019.

Cameron claimed that austerity served as a deficit reduction programme consisting of sustained reductions in public spending and tax rises, intended to reduce the government budget deficit and the role of the welfare state in the United Kingdom. Some commentators accepted this claim, but many scholars have observed that in fact its primary, largely unstated aim, like most austerity policies, was to restore the rate of profit.

Personality

LibCon's personality is kinda boring, but not too boring. He tries to compromise with both liberals and conservatives by adopting some of their policies. Basically the combined personalities of George H.W. Bush, John McCain, John Kasich, David Cameron, Angela Merkel, Mark Rutte and of course, God Emperor Mitt Romney. He may also act like Hank Hill from King of the Hill.

LibCon also really likes reading and money.

He tries to associate himself with Classical Liberalism.

  • Neoliberalism - Same as above, though I don't like that you can be so woke these days.
  • Neoconservatism - Besides that schism we caused in the Republican Party in the 2000s, we're alright. (Don't make me cut the military budget though).
  • Neo-Libertarianism - More close to me than the rest of the liberts. Really a great match for me.
  • Rockefeller Republicanism - RINO before it became mainstream. Thanks for the inspiration!

  • Big Tent Liberalism - Some reasonable advocates of you in America seem to like me quite a lot, and you're very agreeable too.
  • Third Way - Thanks for welcoming me to your faction after most of us left when Trump started running. Sometimes based economics, Hillary was ok back in the day and we both aren't really that different. However, Obama's Environmental regulations and Obamacare were a weak decision.
  • One-Nation Conservatism - My slightly more economically lefty UK counterpart. Disraeli was a hero!
  • Globalism - Free trade is what makes the world prosperous!
  • Moderatism - The GOP shall be closed for radicals and extremists and The Tories are free from them!

  • Conservatism - We're both conservatives so I expect you to be voting for me- OH COME ON, WHY ARE YOU VOTING FOR NATCON?!
  • Conservative Liberalism - No, sorry pal, we're not the same. You're just the above but even more against big govermnent, hopefully your more right of center followers will get more power. PragerU is annoying sometimes.
  • National Liberalism - Fellow Right-Liberal, but he's way too nationalistic and somewhat racist for my tastes. But at least he's not like that fool. I'm sorry you got ruined by them.
  • Paternalistic Conservatism - Neutered socialist, but tolerable. I guess I'll incorporate some of their policies.
  • Social Liberalism - Same as above, but woke.
  • Social Capitalism - Same again, though this time culturally moderate and more open to markets.
  • Homoconservatism - Gay rights are needed for a functioning and successful society! Drop the "T" and we're fine.
  • Classical Conservatism - Waaaaay too traditionalist for my tastes.
  • National Conservatism - Not a fan of his fanatical conservatism and nationalism, but we have to work together. I'll also incorporate some of their policies.
  • Libertarian Conservatism - We're almost a match but he complains that I'm too statist, anti-cannabis and compromise with Neoconservatism. Still, I like him and he's been a good middle during The Neutered Communist Grandpa and Far-Right Orange Maniac. Barry Goldwater is better than Ron Paul, still.
  • Traditionalism - Nature is non-stop changes! Be wiser like you always say, not every aspect of innovationism is automatically a failture.

  • Erdoğanism - You used to be so cool in the 2000s. What happened to you?!
  • Nordic Model - My main rival in the Nordics. You've flooded our countries with those islamic migrants who outright refuse to integrate into our culture and we have to waste our welfare on them! But wow, those mentioned welfare policies are pretty good though. In fact, so good that I adopted some of them for myself.
  • Alt-Lite - You'd better grow out of this edgy phase before it's too late!
  • Bojoism - Some of your views align with mine and I still prefer you over him, but your authoritarianism and euroscepticism rub me the wrong way...
  • Radical Centrism - Some pragmatism and compromise would be nice but something seems off with you...
  • Conservative Socialism - A lot of you are culturally moderate but socialism and defending regimes in The Third World make me feel iffy about your talents...
  • Korwinism - This is not what I meant by finding an alternative for Conservatism and Liberalism! Thought, I am skeptikal about the "Bloody Socialists being hunged on trees instead of leaves", quote.
