    Fictional Ideology
    "The party would like to remind you this ideology has never existed" - Ingsoc
    This article is about a fictional ideology and has no foundation in real life political movements.

    (The Party has instructed the author to remind you that War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, and Ignorance is Strength. Big Brother is always watching you.)

    English Socialism, most known by its clipping Ingsoc and alternatively as Orwellianism, is a "doubleplus" totalitarian ideology based on George Orwell's classic novel 1984, inhabiting an AuthUnity area outside the Political Compass. He is most often described as "the apex of totalitarianism", in which the state has complete control over the individual.

    History

    English novelist George Orwell wrote fiction that heavily criticized totalitarianism. A Dsa.png democratic socialist, he feared that more statist Soc.png Socialist movements in the United Kingdom would ultimately turn into a totalitarian society governed entirely by a single party and ideology. He published Nineteen Eighty-Four in 1949 and created the English Socialist Party, or Ingsoc, as an example of this, showing the consequences of unhinged government surveillance, endless war, and propaganda.

    Party Policy

    IngSoc in the book used various means to get the people of Oceania under control, such as:

    Newspeak

    Newspeak is the official language of the Oceanian State. It is an extremely simplified version of the English Language, which within Newspeak is referred to as Oldspeak. The Purpose of Newspeak is the elimination of any and all nuance from the English Language to make anyone who speaks in this new version of English could only think as the party dictates.

    Newspeak is primarily made up of clippings of oldspeak words, with an example being the party's name "Ingsoc" and the names of ministries of the oceanian state (minitrue, miniluv, miniplenty and minipax), a reference to political and bureaucratic jargon of the USSR (Politburo, Comintern, Gulag, etc.) and also of Nazi Germany (Gestapo, Nazi, etc.).

    Newspeak was a criticism of the tendency within the English language to become more and more simplified in such a way that nuance is removed from the language, something Orwell also talked about in his essay Politics and the English Language.

    Doublethink

    Doublethink is the state of believing 2 completely contradictory terms at the same time with complete certainty about both. An example is "We have always been at war with Eurasia, Eastasia was always our ally and we have always been at war with Eastasia, Eurasia was always our ally". Doublethink is based on the various ideological contradictions totalitarian states would go to, to achieve their political goals. For example, the way that in Nazi Germany the enemy was portrayed as both inferior to the Germans, yet also as controlling the entire world from the shadows.

    Personality

    IngSoc is a malevolent and power-hungry individual seeking to exert his will across everything in existence. IngSoc generally acts without showing much emotion and has a cold and clinical manner of speaking. The only exceptions are when he is talking about Big Brother, in which case he will be somewhat enthusiastic.

    Like in 1984, IngSoc will constantly rewrite facts, even doing so mid-sentence at times. In many cases, IngSoc genuinely believes in the lies and contradictions he makes up, a consequence of Doublethink (see Further Reading for more information).

    IngSoc has no tolerance for dissent in others. Should any character contradict him or slight him in any way, IngSoc will 'vaporize' the offender and they will become unpersoned. Commenting on the disappearance of said individuals will also result in being unpersoned.

    Stylistic Notes

    • IngSoc always has one eye and is the only Polcompball to have a pupil.
    • IngSoc should talk preferably in Newspeak.
    • IngSoc often takes a Big Brother-esque role in comics but is by no means limited to it.
    • The red V-shape must reach the outline at all three vertices.
    • Using 1984 references is encouraged.

    How to Draw

    Flag of Ingsoc

    IngSoc's Design is based on the Ingsoc flag used in the film. But simplified to its core parts; The red "V" and the black background. IngSoc has a single eye with a pupil, as a reference to 1984 book covers, which tend to feature a single eye.

    1. Draw a ball outline in black.
    2. Fill the ball in with a lighter shade of black.
    3. Draw a large V-shape with a darkish red and fill it in.
    4. Draw one (American) football-shaped eye, add a pupil, and you're done!
